Women Soldiers' Testimonies

An Israeli soldier and Palestinian students at a checkpoint in Hebron. A new booklet of female soldiers' stories highlights the damaging effects of the ongoing conflict on both sides. REUTERS/Nayef Hashlamoun Photo: NAYEF HASHLAMOUN On the way out of a popular Jerusalem steakhouse last Wednesday, I was introduced to an American-Israeli named Aliza. A member of the Israel Defense Forces public relations unit, Aliza quickly explained that she was busy hosting a dinner for some foreign journalists. "Whom of course, internally, I despise," she added apologetically, not knowing who I was. Among the "despised" journalists at her table were Charles Levinson of The Wall Street Journal, and Sheera Frenkel, who writes for The Times of London. Neither they, nor their Murdoch-owned mastheads, are what you would call typically rabid haters of Israel. Advertisement: Story continues below Whether or not the IDF flack actually loathed these two reporters hardly matters. What her comments do reveal is the deep resentment felt by Israel's political elite towards what is perceived to be a biased foreign press corps. After last year's war in Gaza, and the later report for the United Nations Human Rights Council by Justice Richard Goldstone that accused Israel of war crimes, sensitivity to how Israel is perceived abroad has been more heightened than ever. Yet the most piercing insights into the Israeli-Arab conflict today have nothing to do with the foreign media. They come from within Israeli society itself. In the past two years, internationally acclaimed films such as Waltz With Bashir, Ajami, and Lebanon, have added exceptional context to the deep divisions within Israeli society and the long-term effects of the conflict on its people. More disturbing still are the verbatim accounts of some of the soldiers who have served in the occupied Palestinian territories of the West Bank and the Gaza Strip. The damaging effects of the occupation, not just on Palestinians but on the soldiers themselves, are laid bare in a booklet published last week by the Rosetta Stone V3 group Breaking the Silence, an organization of Israeli army veterans who have taken it upon themselves to expose life in the occupied territories to the Israeli public. Titled Women Soldiers' Testimonies, the booklet details the experiences of more than 40 female soldiers who have served in various roles in the territories since 2000. Testimony 24 was provided by a sergeant on a night-time search for weapons near Hebron, a Palestinian city that is also sacred to Jews and whose centre has been taken over by Israeli settlers. It was about 2am when the raiding party climbed the steps to a large Palestinian house. "So we entered these people's home, the father opens the door for us, in his robe, and the mother and grandmother and two little kids woke up too. Now they look at you with this look, like 'you're entering our home at two o'clock in the morning'. "Everything was just so messed up . . . and the father tries to ask, the owner tries to ask questions and talk and none of us even bother to speak to him at all. The soldiers go on, opening and trashing and trashing just about everything in that house, turning the whole place inside out . . . all the drawers, the closets, everything. And we didn't find a thing. Nothing." After an hour, the soldiers went on to a second house. "That was the first moment I realised why we are looked at like that, and why we are so hated. You enter in the most disgusting manner, without a drop of humanity, because the disrespect in the answers the man was given — the wife and children were not even addressed — I mean, no one even looked at them. "I can't even begin to describe to you the shame I felt, ashamed of the way we were behaving, entering their home like that, that we . . . "I'll never forget this as long as I live, I'm telling you. I have this picture in my head, of those kids staring at me." Other accounts detail how Israeli soldiers routinely beat Palestinians "to a pulp" for fun, or cocked loaded rifles in the faces of detainees kneeling handcuffed before them, or how Israeli army doctors would "carry out all sorts of experiments on seriously wounded people". "Sometimes the doctors would come back from their event and say, 'yes, he was already finished, but we did practise some intubation', or this or that," said a lieutenant from the Hebron Regional Brigade/Medical Corps.

CSOFT Launches Language Competition on

CSOFT International, a provider of multilingual localization, testing, and software development services for the global market, has announced the official launch of the "language race" on . In a release, the Company said that this wiki-based competition on the growing social learning network and online multilingual reference site encourages anyone, writers, linguists and translators to compete to push their native language to the top of the "most active" list. allows users to find terms, definitions, and translations in 75 languages and over 200 industries at no cost to its users. Since the test launch of the race in early February, traffic to the site has increased ten-fold."An overwhelming majority of online content today is in English," said Carl Yao, Executive Vice President and head of Global Strategy for CSOFT International. "We thought it would be fun to create a competition so our users can push up lesser known or even endangered languages to the top of the TermWiki glossary." "Competition evokes an emotional response when we win or lose and generates participation," continued Yao. "This is exactly why the TermWiki language race is heating up. Furthermore, by giving contributors their much-deserved recognition, provides its users with a social networking platform through which to connect with friends, peers and other professionals. At the moment, English, Polish, German, Rosetta Stone English Turkish, Japanese, Russian and Greek are leading the race, but the leader spot is a moving target." The specific math language of the standards is used, and there is a clear connection between the CTE standard and the academic standard. In New Hampshire, the applied math is at a low level (fractions, decimals, percentages), and may not accurately reflect the complexity of problems encountered within a technical area. As of August 2009, the New Hampshire CTE frameworks have only been linked to science, which impacts the ability of researchers to evaluate the type of math that can be emphasized in CTE programs, and the level of academic rigor provided. The New Hampshire Department of Education, however, indicated that the standards did not truly reflect the commitment to high math standards. The state is in its third year of implementing the National Research Center for Career and Technical Education's Math-in-CTE program, which partners academic math instructors with CTE instructors to create integrated lessons, and a representative from the state education department reported "success" with this program. In addition, at all levels, both Nebraska and New Hampshire said that integration of other academic areas into the CTE curriculum is required, and gave specific examples of integrated activities (Nebraska Department of Education, 2003; New Hampshire Department of Education, 2009).

The bad thing is the distance

I was totally confused; I had no idea what to do,'' Capotorto says of the attention that followed the Triple J competition. ''I was a little 15-year-old coming home from school to an email flooded with offers from around the world. I'd be replying to these bigwigs, it was crazy. So the first step for us has been getting a manager.'' His parents weren't keen on the idea at first but they've since come around. Look out for Capotorto's dad at their next gig. ''He's a real crazy Frenchman who is always dancing at our shows,'' he says. ''But I'm not so sure they like the music.'' JINJA SAFARI Genre ''Forest rock,'' Marcus Azon says. From Sydney (via Tasmania) and the central coast. Coming gigs March 13, noon, Garden Music at Government House, city, 8239 2211, $35; March 24, 8pm, Metro Theatre, city, 9550 3666, $30.70 (supporting Cloud Control). Last year, Azon stuck a poster on his bedroom wall. It was a promo poster for Splendour in the Grass and down the bottom, underneath Ben Harper, the Strokes and all the rest, he circled a little spot where it said ''Triple J Unearthed winner'' and told himself that would be him. ''When our manager called to say we'd got the spot, it was just so weird,'' says the frontman and multi-instrumentalist from the two-man (but increasingly five-man) group, joking that Glastonbury will be next on the wall. ''We'd only played a couple of shows before the main stage at Splendour. It felt like we were in an old Greek colosseum, looking out at these thousands of people ready to consume you and we were just five skinny white guys dancing badly on stage,'' he says. ''But that's our vibe. We want to create dancing music, as opposed to dance music, where you can kinda just let go of inhibitions and not try to be sexy or cool.'' They call it ''forest rock'' or the more kitsch ''Afro-pop jungle surf rock''. We call it some of the freshest, most carefree music to come out of Sydney. Interestingly, the inspiration comes from the Ugandan town of Jinja, where Azon's grandmother lives. ''I was really interested in the Rosetta Stone German Afro-pop beats and Cam [Knight, the band's other lead vocalist and multi-instrumentalist] was interested in Eastern sounds, using a sitar and percussion and stuff,'' he says. ''We just believed that the music we were making was a lot of fun and hoped that something good came out of it.'' GEORGIA FIELDS Genre Quirky pop.Label Popboomerang Records. gigs May 19, 8pm, Raval, Surry Hills, 8262 8888, $15. A line in the song Sinking Relation Ship sums up the music of 27-year-old Georgia Fields. ''We keep up our faces/We wind up our smiles/Mechanical romance alive,'' she sings. Twee pop and experimentation has produced exactly that: a beautiful, mechanical romance. When Fields returned in 2007 from a year in Europe, she met up with a high school friend and cellist Judith Hamann, who loved to play around with the more experimental side of music. This influenced Fields deeply and so, when she made her entrance into the local music scene that year, it was with a fusion of elegant pop and eccentric folk music, using everything from children's toys to classical instruments and power drills. But it could have been a very different story had she not taken a job in a boring office on the other side of the world four years ago. ''I finished high school and was just floating about being an early-20s mess, so I decided to go overseas for a while,'' she says. ''I was working in admin to pay the bills in London. One day, a director forgot my name and asked me to fill up the coffee machine, calling me 'sweetie'. It was like a turning point for me I was like, 'If I don't do something, I'll still be here in 10 years' time.' I booked a ticket home as fast as I could and started pursuing music.'' SPLIT SECONDS Genre Folk pop. From Perth.Label Unsigned.Coming gigs None. Being a buzz band in the relatively isolated city of Perth has its good and bad points, Sean Pollard is discovering.

Directed by first-timer Richard De Aragues

The editing is superb, the 3D looks great - the format has found a home with high-end docs, it seems - and the inevitable prangs are jaw-dropping, but towards the end you become aware of other riders who should have received more screen time. Directed by first-timer Richard De Aragues. Select. WARRIOR (140 min) MHere's a theory about how this bland, fight-themed cardboard drama came about: a couple of studio suits paid a visit to Hollywood's fabled Autowrite computer, which specialises in spitting out screenplays according to a supplied formula. They showed it Darren Aronofsky's The Wrestler and David O Russell's The Fighter, then said to Autowrite: "Do us one of these, but about mixed martial arts". Tom Hardy and Joel Edgerton play warring brothers from a broken family who are forcedtogether when their bedraggled ex-alcoholic dad (Nick Nolte - who else?) tries getting back into their lives. Grainy, hand-held cinematography can't lend authenticity to the forced emotion. The film is being plugged as being from "The director of Miracle". Miracle was a fine film, butGavin O'Connor also directed the terrible cop drama Pride and Glory (2008), which providesa much more accurate measure of the mediocrity of Warrior. Even the brutal fight scenes are a mess. If you have no idea what mixed martial arts is going into this film, you'll emerge none the wiser. General Rosetta Stone Software . WHAT'S YOUR NUMBER (106 min) MA Funny girl Anna Faris (Scary Movie; House Bunny) can't quite bring her signature charm to this largely charmless attempt at an adult rom She plays a promiscuous middle aged woman who believes the next man she sleeps with must be "the one"; offering advice is the oily, largely unlikeable Lothario across the hall (Chris Evans, aka Captain America). The film's satirical jabs at people addicted to Facebook and Twitter raises a few smiles in what is otherwise a straight-to-cinemas DVD release. Interestingly, this is the fifth mainstream American studio film this year to puncture the myth that lots of obligation-free, recreational sex leads to happiness. What is going on? General. THE WHISTLEBLOWER1/2 (104 min) MA In this extremely well-meaning, occasionally brutal, over-wrought slice of political filmmaking, an Americanised Rachel Weisz plays Nebraska cop Kathryn Bolkovac who, having failed as a mother at home, takes on a top-paying job in Bosnia. She there as a monitor for the United Nations, but soon sees the contractors she working for are into the human trafficking and sex slavery theyre meant to combat. Vanessa Redgrave adds her name to the cause and Weisz works hard as Bolkovac tries doing the right thing in a world of official corruption and immunity clauses, but the righteousness is laid on several layers too thick by first-time director Larysa Kondracki. Yes, the film is based on the experiences of the real Kathryn Bolkovac, but do we have to see her type out her inflammatory let-do-the-right-thing e-mail word for word, and in extreme close-up? Also, the closing minutes of the film suggest the most challenging parts of the story still remains untold. Select. ZOOKEEPER (102 min) PG From the unstoppable Adam Sandler hit factory comes this pleasant, kid-friendly, ultra-formulaic shlub-does-good comedy from the impossible-to-dislike Kevin James, who here reheats his loser persona from the shock hit Paul Blart: Mall Cop to become a passionate carer of talking zoo animals. After having his heart broken, he now trying to win back the affections of the money-seeking woman (Leslie Bibb in a fabulous, pivotal comic performance), though fellow zookeeper (Rosario Dawson) and his animal friends think he making a big mistake.

The Original of Laura

While it's hardly a masterpiece, Vladimir Nabokov's unfinished workprovides a glimpse into his painful final days. By Vladimir Nabokov, edited by Dmitri Nabokov Penguin, 8pp, $55 DON'T be misled by the size of this sumptuous book. You'll needless than three hours to read it from cover to cover, and even then you'll be reading most of it twice. Advertisement: Story continues below In the two years before his deathin 1977, Vladimir Nabokov was working on a new novel, sketchingbits and pieces, including a few short sections marked as chapters,on ruled index cards, writing (mostly in pencil) on one side of thecard only. He had been in poor health, his son Dmitri writes in hisintroduction, ever since an undignified fall in 1975 while chasingbutterflies at the Swiss alpine resort of Davos. He pressed onnevertheless, working on his cards, arranging and shuffling them, deleting some phrases, adding others. In 1977 his health took a turn for the worse. While undergoing a banal operation, hecontracted an infection that left him debilitated. He persisted with his cards, however, even during his last days in hospital, where he died after a nurse with a cold (who had also left a wind owopen) gave him a bronchial infection. Little was said of the exact causes of his malady, Dmitri Nabokov writes. The death of the great man was veiled in embarrassedsilence. Some years later, when he wanted to pinthings down for biographical purposes, he wasdenied all access to his father's medical files. During the last weeks of Nabokov's life, according to his son, the writer gave specific instructions that the cards must Rosetta Stone English be destroyed if he were to die beforecompleting at least a first draft. Those instructions were ignored. The cards stayed in their box. Now, long after the deaths of both his parents, Dmitri Nabokov has decided to publish those fragments of The Original of Laura, an embryonicmasterpiece. The original of Laura 821Laura is a character in a novel is a woman called Flora, the granddaughter of a Russian painter of bad genre paintings and the daughter of a ballet dancer. In the fragments Nabokov marked as the second and third chapters (occupying 25 index cards), we learn about Flora's early life, including her near-seduction when she wasan adolescent by a wine merchant with bad breath called Hubert H.Hubert. In Chapters 4 and 5 (nine cards), Flora meets Dr Philip Wild,a brilliant neurologist . . . of independent means who had everything save an attractive exterior. Floramarries him for his wealth and promptly sets out on a succession of torrid affairs as we learn from an enigmatic first chapter( cards) and from other snippets among Nabokov's jottings. One of Flora's lovers writes anovel about their affair, turning her into Laura and Philip Wildinto Philidor Sauvage get it? There's not much in formation about that novel, Laura, among Nabokov's cards except for asequence of three marked Final in which Flora learnson the railway station of a Swiss town called Sex 821that she has been given a wonderful death, a death that will make her scream with laughter. Nabokov may have had Dying Is Fun in mind as an alternative title for The Original of Laura. Understandably, Dmitri Nabokovbelieves that the fragments he and his mother failed to destroy would have turned into a masterpiece had his father lived longenough to complete the work. On the evidence of what has survived that is doubtful. The bulk of this material seems little different from Nabokov's last published works: Last Things, Look at the Harlequins! and even the longer and much more intricate Ada. The baroque turns of phrase, the puns and the languagegames are still there, but like the final works 821The Original of Laura lacks the verve and extravagance of Nabokov's three masterpieces: Pnin, Lolita and Pale Fire. For all that, one set of cardscontains extraordinary and extraordinarily disturbing material.

Subaru Tribeca's soft new face

Click for more photos Subaru Tribeca's soft new face Subaru Tribeca Conservative new exterior styling, a more powerful engine and tweaks to the interior address major criticisms of Subaru's slow-selling full-size 4WD, report GLENN BUTLER and TOBY HAGON. A rushed mid-life update puts a new face on the Tribeca four-wheel drive, and is symptomatic of a deeper issue for Subaru. The company renowned for its symmetrical all-wheel drive system is more than three years behind its global sales objective of 800,000 announced in 01, hence the fresh face not only on its great four-wheel drive hope but also at the helm with the appointment of new CEO Ikuo Mori. Mori told Drive.au that one of his priorities with the Subaru brand is to establish a design language. It's a tough task for a company better known for its engineering prowess, and especially so because Mori is determined that the new language should reflect Subaru's aircraft heritage. Regardless, Mori's number one job is to get Subaru back on track with its sales plan, hence the Tribeca redesign just two years after it first launched in the United States and barely four months after its November debut in Australia. Mori says Subaru is still keen to chase growth, but thinks the company will do well to break 700,000 in 07. Advertisement: Story continues below The Tribeca's more conservative visage and more powerful engine addresses two major criticisms of the seven-seat four-wheel drive which is selling at barely 50 per cent of its North American goals, and around 75 per cent of the hoped-for 150 sales per month in Australia. The revised nose Rosetta Stone Portuguese boasts a more contemporary and conservative slatted grille, along with new headlights and softer bonnet creases to help make the car more appealing and less polarising. The rear of the car has also been softened, mainly around the rear-most side windows, taillights and bumper bar. It's the second-quickest facelift in the last decade for Subaru, after the bug-eyed Impreza WRX was 'fixed' in 02. The changes include not only components like headlights, taillights, bumpers, wing mirrors and the grille, but also more expensive sheetmetal changes to the front quarter panels and rear-side window surrounds. The 3.0-litre flat six-cylinder engine has been enlarged to 3.6 litres, which should translate into better acceleration off the line and greater urge in low revs. While the engine size has increased some per cent, power has only increased 4 per cent while torque is improved by 13 per cent to 5Nm. Importantly, however, the new engine is now tuned to run on regular unleaded - rather than more expensive premium unleaded - in an effort to reduce running costs. The Tribeca gains a tilt-and-slide on both the driver and passenger side of the second row of seats, and the rear doors open wider. Both changes are aimed at criticisms of access to the third row. Subaru Australia is not expecting the revised Tribeca to arrive here until early . "The updated Tribeca will not be produced for right-hand drive markets until year end, so it won't reach Australia until January," says Subaru Australia managing director Nick Senior. "However, we believe it will further underline Tribeca's appeal as a premium vehicle that represents remarkable value in its class.

Or you can book ahead of time

An array of enormous fireplaces and elaborate ceilings, the sheerscale of the duke's apartment conjoining the duchess's digs, theexquisite frescoes in parquetry adorning the walls of the duke'sstudy and the graceful, spiralling sweep of the main staircase willtransport you to romantic imaginings. Stand at a palace window and look out to the masses (you mayhave to surreptitiously pull a gallery curtain, as I did) andglimpse how Duke Federico was connected so intimately to thistown. The palace also houses an archaeological museum and, below, alabyrinth of cellar vaults that are still being excavated andrestored, featuring relics of ingenious plumbing methods, ancientwashtubs and gloomy wells. Again I was eerily alone, except for thesecurity cameras and movement sensors clicking quietly on as Imoved from room to room. The information office is on Piazza Duca Federico. Walkingaround Urbino takes no more than an hour, so wander towards thecentre and it won't be long before you find it. Or the basic citymaps in Italian guidebooks will get you there directly. The touristinformation map you can pick up there is more detailed. They willalso furnish you with a list of hotels and locations. Or you canbook ahead of time. There are a few hotels in town (with farm stays and pensione inthe outlying districts) but the Hotel Raphael where I stayed wascentral, the rooms simple yet cosy with great heating, aircon, towel warmers and comfy beds. You can get excellent dealsoff-season. Urbino also has great nightlife. There are cafes that turn intopumping student discotecca at night, old-school Italian bars wherethe academics and older locals gather and modern enotecca (winebars) serving local, Tuscan and Umbrian wines. Dinner choices in Urbino are varied both in price and cuisinebut not, it seems, quality. L'Osteria L'Angelo Rosetta Stone Outlet Divino is abeautiful family-run restaurant serving simple, tasty localproduce. Vecchio Urbino has 40 different iced grappas and a menuthat reflects Le Marche's strong association with both sea andland. The region runs north-south between the Appenines andAdriatic and its produce runs the same gamut. The rosterria just outside the Hotel Raphael is a deliciouschoice for a cheap lunch to take up to the Piazzale Roma, with itsmonument to Raphael and views that extend to San Marino on a clearday. There is a great pizzeria and unbelievable gelato andtourist-friendly cafes on the Piazza della Repubblica. Visit the churches - there are better in Italy but still greatart to be found - or take to the streets and have your breath takenaway by so many gorgeous outlooks. Take Via Veneto to Laurana'sPiazza Rinascimento. Amble through the colonnades of CorsoGaribaldi where you will soon chance upon La Rampa, designed totake horses and carriages into the basements of Palazzo Ducale. Theview of the rural surrounds is astounding. Fabulous (if expensive) shops uphold a centuries-old traditionof excellence on Via G Mazzinni. Not to be missed is the beautifully preserved home where Raphaelwas born to his painter father, Giovanni Santi, and where he spenthis first 16 years. There's the courtyard where father and sonmixed paint. And the museum's evocative centrepiece: a fresco of the Madonnapainted by Raphael, quite possibly his first, there on the wallexactly where he left it. Try finding that in Florence. TRIP NOTES All the big hire car outfits have offices close to Florencetermini. There are great deals to be had if you book fromAustralia. The nearest big centres are Rimini and Bologna, so considerhiring from there.

China accuses her of being a separatist terrorist

The US deployed two aircraft carriers to the Taiwan Straits in a clear warning to China. Within days Australia made a strong but lonely public statement of support for the US deployment. Four months later the Howard Government announced the ''reinvigoration'' of the Australian security alliance with the US. China feels that the new Government in Australia last year shifted to the US, said a leading Chinese strategic thinker, Dr Yan Xuetong, head of the Centre for China's Foreign Policy Studies, at the time. The Chinese interpretation was that Australia had decided to join a US policy of containing China.'' Beijing put Australia into deep diplomatic freeze for almost a year. Howard got the message. He changed China policy dramatically. This is how he phrased it in 1997: Australia and China are very different societies, our histories have been very different, our political systems have been very different, but our relationship has always been at its very best. Each of us has fully understood the depth of those differences yet resolved to work together to capitalise on the areas of mutual benefit and common interest. It is always important in a relationship between two very different societies that you put aside those differences and you focus on those areas of common agreement. It became a briskly business first'' approach. Sometimes it verged on being business only. Howard put human rights issues into a tank called a human rights dialogue, a lower-level dialogue of the deaf, from which they never emerged. Rudd made a dramatic departure from this policy. On his first visit to China as prime minister, he addressed Chinese students in Beijing University in their own language. On Chinese soil, and very deliberately, he said the unspeakable. In April last year he said that while Australia recognised Chinese sovereignty over Tibet, we also believe it Rosetta Stone is necessary to recognise there are significant human rights problems in Tibet. He called for dialogue between China and the Dalai Lama to broker a long-term solution to the administration of Tibet. China protested. Rudd stood firm: ''I think this relationship is broad enough to tolerate disagreement, and on these questions I'll be putting my views forthrightly. Instead of business first or business only, Australia's policy shifted to being business plus values. It became very clear that this was not a one-off when Smith defied China and granted a visa to the exiled Uighur activist Rebiya Kadeer. Smith told Parliament quite forthrightly this week: The Chinese authorities at a range of levels, including my counterpart, Foreign Minister Yang, made very strong representations to Australia about the proposed visit to Australia of Rebiya Kadeer and made representations to us that we should prevent her visit. I considered those representations and came to the conclusion that there was no basis for denying her entry to Australia. China accuses her of being a separatist terrorist. Smith said that exhaustive research showed she was not a terrorist but merely someone with whom China's government disagreed.

The Tribal Mind David Dale

The philosophy department of the University of Woolloomooloo PISSANT: There a word you dont hear much any more. Unlike pisspot, which you hear all the time. Well, I do, anyway. But I hadnt heard pissant for at least 15 years until last week, when Ross Garnaut, climate change adviser to the federal government, made this remark: I don't accept that my country is a pissant country. All the evidence is against it." It carried me back to the glory days of Paul Keating and Neville Wran, who slipped such ockerisms into the national debate smoothly and naturally (as opposed to Kevin Rudd, who just sounded bizarre when he talked about a fair shake of the sauce bottle, a few sandwiches short of a picnic, and driving the porcelain bus). That inspired me to do a column on how we are losing our language; how Australians used to be more colourful conversationalists before television turned us into Americans (so blokes and sheilas became guys and chicks and hooroo became have a nice day); and how all this means our daily intercourse is less entertaining than in the linguistic golden age last century. Advertisement: Story continues below The linguistic golden age Photo: Andrew Taylor The trouble is that pissant turns out not to be an ockerism at all. The more I researched the word, the more it looked to be American. Back in the 1960s, US President Lyndon Johnson referred to Rosetta Stone Vietnam as that damn pissant little country. The name apparently comes from the smell of the nests of certain kinds of northern hemisphere wood ants. But even if we didnt invent it, we improved on it. Johnson was using the word as a synonym for trivial. Australia added connotations of cowardly, meanspirited and untrustworthy which seems to be the spirit in which Ross Garnaut was using it. We would be a pissant country if we reneged on our international obligations to cut pollution. Like so many aspects of our culture, we adopted and adapted a concept, and thus convinced ourselves that we own it. Apparently we also convinced the British. In the Monty Python sketch about the philosophy department at the University of Woolloomoloo (where, by a fortunate coincidence, all the lecturers are named Bruce), the philosophers discuss Australia talent for developing unusual expressions Philosopher 1: It hot enough to boil a monkey bum.8221 Philosopher 2: That a strange expression, Bruce.8221 Phil 1: Well Bruce, I heard the prime minister use it. It hot enough to boil a monkey bum in here, your majesty, he said, and she smiled quietly to herself.8221 Phil 2: She a good sheila Bruce. Not at all stuck up. (This was written 30 years before Kevin Rudd became prime minister) The philosophers then sing an anthem which includes the lines: Immanuel Kant was a real pissant, who was very rarely stable. Heidegger, Heidegger was a boozy beggar, who could think you under the table. The song author, Eric Idle, really meant pisspot or piss artist, but would have had trouble finding a name that rhymed with either of those terms. (To see the original sketch, click here. To sing along with the anthem, click here.) The sketch is predicated upon the reputation of Australians for public drunkenness -- another tradition that seems to have got lost between last century and this one. The Bureau of Statistics revealed last week that Australia beer consumption is at its lowest level in 60 years.

Samantha Stosur Serena Williams

Stosur was typically philosophical after the match, saying it showed the level she needs to reach. ''It sucks that you have to come up against someone playing like that and you're out of the tournament, but it does show you what you have to try to get to if you want to be up there with them,'' said Stosur. Whatever put the prickle in Williams's sock, it inspired a performance of such power and ferocity that Stosur, whose big first serve and lean physique make her one of the more imposing specimens in the women's game, had not merely faded from television screens by the end of the match. As the match-clinching ace whizzed by, the Australian was hardly apparent on the court either. By then the upbeat pre-match assessment of Stosur's chances of beating Williams - and even advancing to a first grand slam final - had been made absurd. That tour victory in July last year? The bandaging around the right hamstring and below the left knee that made Williams look like an exhibit from the Egyptian collection at the British Museum? Williams's habit of only winning this tournament in odd - or, given her nature, very odd - years? Thoughts all banished the moment Williams cracked a clean winner off a wide-swinging Stosur serve on break point at 2-2 in the first set to gain the lead she would never look like surrendering. Far from a momentous victory, then, the Australian had to settle for a Rosetta Stone Arabic brutal demonstration of what it takes to win a major - in Willliams's case, 11 times and counting. Perhaps having to wait an extra two hours, as the preceding match between Nikolay Davydenko and Fernando Verdasco dragged into a fifth set, was not an ideal lead-up for the notoriously flighty Stosur entering one of the most significant matches of her career. However, Pete Sampras and Andre Agassi were once asked to wait in the tunnel before walking on to the court for a US Open final because a US television network wanted to stay with an American football match that had gone into overtime. Grand slam champions adapt to the conditions with which they are confronted, they do not have them tailor-made. If Williams's description of Stosur proved somewhat accurate - there was some framing - the Australian was, at least, not completely disheartened. She drew a couple of break points at 0-1 in the second set and could have stemmed the bleeding. But that would have made Williams even more angry. Williams said sorry to the crowd for stomping on the local favourite. Of course, the only apology should come from Seven whose ''live and exclusive'' coverage of the match was a replay of the final game about an hour after it finished. But be assured the dodgy fridge repairmen got the same treatment as Stosur.

Entertainment, Restaurants and Bars in Dundee

With two universities in a relatively small city, nightlife in Dundee tends to be livelier during the academic term times than when the student population is not there. Having said that there are plenty of pubs, bars and restaurants to choose from that will give you a friendly welcome. Being one of the most northern cities in the UK summer evenings are that bit longer. Which means it's all the better to enjoy a drink or meal outdoors until late into the evening. Of course the converse is also true, shorter daytimes in the winter, but that just gives you different good reasons to settle into a cosy and warm bar or restaurant to meet and chat with some friends. Bars and Pubs:The Doghouse on Barn Street is one of the newer 'drinking halls' that are prevalent in all the UKs cities. However, it has a good and relaxed atmosphere and regularly has live music from local bands during weekend evenings. There is also a regular comedy club, with an 'open mic' on Mondays. Although the beer served here won't win any awards; pool tables and an out-door seating area make this a very pleasant doghouse to be in. The unlikely named Reading Rooms, at Blackscroft, is actually one of Scotland's best live music venues, catering to a wide spectrum of tastes. Everything from big band to folk music can be show cased here, or if you fancy a free lesson in break-dancing then go along on a Wednesday evening. The pub has a beer garden, which is particularly pleasant on a summers evening. Some of the best pubs in the area are in neighbouring Broughty Ferry. The Fisherman's Tavern on Fort Street, serves good cask ales and has plenty of nooks and crannies to sit in. This hotel and pub holds an annual beer festival in June, which can get a bit raucous but the proceeds go to support the Lifeboat Association. The Ship Inn is on the seafront at Fisher Street. It's a small 'cabin' style pub, that would be quaintly described as intimate. Inside there are loads of nautical memorabilia and great views across the Forth of Tay.Restaurants:With two AA rosettes the Alchemy Restaurant in the Rosetta Stone Indian Dundee City Quay Hotel is definitely the place to eat the best food in town. The head chef, Bruce Price , has produced a menu with all the best in Scottish and European ingredients and cooking. The three course set menu is a little under ?30 per head, excluding drinks. There is also the Highland tasting menu at ?32 per head. The restaurants wine list, whilst not containing any great vintages, is accessible to everyone. Wine prices, excluding champagnes, range from under ?12 for a Sauvignon Blanc to ?40 for a Burgundy. A winner of the Scottish Good Curry Guide award is the Dil'se restaurant on Perth Road. Expect to pay around ?20 per head, at this modern glass fronted restaurant, for a three course meal. Dil'se serves mainly Bangladeshi food including an excellent Chicken Tikka dish. If you're feeling a little more adventurous, ask if the 'Mas Bangla' is on the menu when you're there, it is an innovative dish using Scottish Salmon. Howie's Restaurant and Bar is on South Tay Street. Although small and intimate, it's contemporary and sophisticated ambience appeals to a clientele seeking a more 'exclusive' evening out at unpretentious prices. A two course dinner at under ?20 a head makes Howie's excellent value for money. The Jute Caf?-Bar is a popular place to lunch in Dundee, as well as being open for evening meals. Located in the Dundee Contemporary Arts Centre, on Nethergait, dishes include tuna and roast chilli wraps and spicy pork skewers with a honey glaze. Also on Nethergait is the Deep Sea. Run by an Italian family from Tuscany, this is the place to go if you fancy eating out on a fish supper - that's fish and chips to most of us. You can eat in, or take out, these excellently prepared and generous portions. However, be aware that it closes early in the evening. Staying with an Italian theme, in Broughty Ferry there is an Ice Cream shop and cafe called Visocchi's - which is also owned by an Italian family. If it's hot and summery enjoy a gorgeous ice cream or if it's cold and damp; an espresso in the morning or a pizza for lunch. Visocchi's is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner on Gray Street, a couple of hundred metres above the harbour.

3 Tips To Clearing Clutter In The Kitchen For Holidays and Everyday

When you think of clearing clutter what do you think of? I know from my experience as a professional organizer many of us think of getting rid of things but this is just part of clearing clutter. I was given some plates for Christmas that are for everyday use that I love. I put them in the cupboard but I rarely ever used them. I wanted to use them and felt bad because I didn't, so I came up with a simple solution. I simply moved them to a different shelf in my cupboard. I had one of those corner shelves that doubled my cupboard space and I just changed places with some other plates I had had there for a long time and only used infrequently. What a difference such a simple exchange made. I can now use my plates and eat on them too. (Just like having my cake and eating it to).We don't always have to get rid of things to think we are clearing clutter. With a few organizing tips and organizing ideas we can create a home that is organized, functional and welcoming to us and to our guests. As the holidays approach by starting early to look at each room in our homes to see if we need to do some clutter clearing we will be less stressed not only during and before the holidays, but actually all year around. Here are some of my favorite organizing tips. Let's start with the kitchen: junk drawers can be a hassle and junky or they can be resource drawers. Because so many people in our homes use them and are in and out of these drawers, make it easy for them to put things away after they use it. Have you noticed it is easier to get things out than put things away? In the resource Rosetta Stone software drawer the key to clearing clutter is to have plenty of containers, you can use several different sizes, depending on your needs. In one container place the pens and pencils. In another have glue and tape. I recommend having one place for every kind of tape your family uses. Then if you ask someone to get tape for you they will know exactly where to go to get it.Check out your utensil drawer or holder. Are there utensils there you never use and are just clutter? Are there too many spatulas and pancake turners? Are any broken, stained, or rusty that could be thrown away to give you more room in your drawer or holder? If your utensils are in a drawer, install a drawer divider to keep them contained in one place so they don't slide all over. Do your cupboards hold more dishes that you use making your cupboards crowded and let's say not user friendly? Divide your shelves by type of space. Premium spaces are the places you get into to use the items stored there on a daily basis. The dishes you use about once a week place in a secondary space. And dishes you use about once a year, such as holiday dishes place in semi-storage. You know where they are but they aren't visible on a monthly basis.By using a few organizing tips and organizing ideas you will feel more confident with clearing clutter, creating space and end clutter in your homes for the holidays and for everyday.Marilyn's bio: Marilyn is a creative organizer who helps women, seniors and their families create space and end clutter in their homes and offices by setting up custom made systems.Marilyn invites you to visit her website marilynbohn where you can find solutions to your organizing needs.
